Who may join

Health: 90 days at the mostA group health plan may make a new hire wait up to 90 calendar days, after an orientation period of up to a month if you have one. Full-time means 30 hours a week or more.
Retirement: a year at the mostA 401(k) may ask for a year with 1,000 hours and an age of 21. Part-timers with 500 hours in two years in a row join too. A SIMPLE IRA takes anyone who earned $5,000 in any two earlier years and expects to this year.
People on a 1099Subcontractors can't join the company's retirement or group health plans. Some companies pay them a little more instead; that amount is set on each person's page.
