Time off is labor costA paid week off is a week of wages with no squares behind it, so it raises what each worked hour costs.
A plan for each kind of leaveVacation, sick leave, a PTO bank, jury duty: each is a plan that names who gets it. The crews can have their own.
Federal law asks for no paid time offIt keeps the job for jury duty and military service, and gives 12 unpaid weeks under FMLA once you have 50 employees. Your state may ask for more.

If you're in Colorado

Paid sick leave is requiredThe Healthy Families and Workplaces Act: 1 hour per 30 worked, up to 48 a year, for every employee, crews included. Up to 48 hours carry over unless the full 48 are given up front. C.R.S. 8-13.3-401.
Earned vacation stays earnedVacation pay counts as wages: a use-it-or-lose-it rule can't take it back, and what's left is paid out when someone leaves. A cap on how much builds up is allowed. C.R.S. 8-4-101.
FAMLI premiumsPaid family and medical leave takes 0.88% of wages in 2026, split half and half with employers of ten or more. C.R.S. 8-13.3-507.
Jury duty and votingRegular wages, up to $50 a day, for the first three days of jury service; up to two paid hours to vote. C.R.S. 13-71-126 and 1-7-102.
