The year ahead, month by month: a payment while the loan or the lease runs (and the loan's fee, spread over its term), then wear: the price less what the vehicle would still sell for, over the years you keep one. Insurance and plates are the vehicle's own or its share of the fleet's total; fuel is what the cards were charged, or the miles at the mileage and your price a gallon. A trailer burns no fuel; a vehicle out of service is left out. It is the same arithmetic as the running total beside the form.

Worked example

How a year of upkeep adds up

A three-quarter-ton pickup that drives 18,000 miles a year.

  1. Oil changes $330 Every 6,000 miles is three a year, at $110.
  2. Tires $560 A $1,400 set lasts 45,000 miles, so two and a half years: $1,400 ÷ 2.5.
  3. Brakes $350 $700 every two years: $700 ÷ 2.
  4. The repair nobody planned $600 A water pump, a sensor, a windshield: set aside $600.
  5. A year of upkeep $1,840

A 14-foot tandem-axle dump trailer, on the road most days.

  1. Tires $180 Four at $180 last four years: one tire's worth a year.
  2. Wheel bearings $160 Repacked once a year, $160 at the shop.
  3. Brakes $130 $390 for both axles every three years: $390 ÷ 3.
  4. Hydraulic fluid and battery $70 The pump's battery and a top-off, about $70 a year.
  5. Lights, wiring and the tarp $110 Something gets torn or backed into: $110.
  6. A year of upkeep $650

Round, typical figures, to show how the sum is built. Work out your own the same way; last year's receipts for the machine beat any example.
